Piapot began in the 1880s as a siding on the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the rail line still runs through it today. The hamlet lies within the Rural Municipality of Piapot No. 110.
For a time it was a thriving community, but it has declined steadily since the 1950s, and today it has the look of a ghost town. The hotel and saloon closed in 2006, then reopened in May 2008, embracing western heritage and culture. Along with the post office, the hotel and saloon are the only businesses open to the public.
